Pablo Serrano (1910-1985)
Spanish, 1908–1985
Pablo Serrano is considered one of the most important Spanish sculptors in history. Finalist at the Venice Biennale in 1961 behind Giacometti, he is the only Spanish artist, along with Picasso, to have exhibited, while alive, at the Hermitage Museum. Pablo Serrano's works are present in the main museums and foundations in the world such as the MoMa or the Guggenheim in New York, the Center Pompidou, the Musée d'art Moderne de Paris or the Hermitage. Pablo Serrano received constant recognition: in 1967 he was elected a member of the Societé Européenne de Culture in Venice, in 1969 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Flanders (Belgium). In 1980 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Zaragoza, in 1981 he was named an academician of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and in 1983 named doctor honoris causa by the University of Zaragoza. In 1994 the Pablo Serrano Museum was created in Zaragoza, which brings together most of his work.
