Biography

Photographer and curator Paige Powell is best known for her series “Jean-Michel Basquiat, Reclining Nude” (1983), a collection of black-and-white 35mm nude portraits of Jean-Michel Basquiat taken over the course of their two-year relationship. These images were just a handful from her extensive archive of documentary photography focused on the avant-garde art world of the 1980s—particularly the circle of artists that congregated around Andy Warhol at his Factory—and the struggle of artists with the AIDS epidemic, drug addiction, and poverty. To Powell her images possess an autobiographical element that renders them as much about her subjects as her relationship to them: “Unknowingly I was documenting my life. I wasn’t analytical,” she has said. “It was all really about being in the moment, the spontaneity of it and becoming part of the moment.”
