Paul Berger

Paul Berger has been working in the photographic medium since 1965, and in digital electronic media since 1981. He earned a BA degree in Art at UCLA in 1970, studying with Robert Heinecken and Robert Fichter, and completed his MFA graduate work at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, in 1973, studying with Nathan Lyons.

Berger’s photographic works involve multiple images in structured sequences, often with texts. This interest in sequence and narrative transitioned to one based in digital manipulation of electronic imagery beginning in the early 1980's. His photographic and digital artworks have exhibited widely, both nationally and in Europe, including major exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Paris and Cologne. His most recent publication, Multiplex was released in 2018 by Minor Matter Books - offers a survey of the artist’s career.

Paul Berger taught at the University of Washington's School of Art for 35 years, having co-founded the Photography program in 1978. Berger’s photographs are in the collections of numerous institutions, including the George Eastman House - Rochester, NY, The Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Bibliotheque Nationale - Paris, France, International Center for Photography - New York, NY, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Museum of Contemporary Photography - Chicago, IL, The Art Museum, Princeton University, Microsoft Art Collection - Redmond, WA, Reattu Museum - Arles, France, Center for Creative Photography - University of Arizona, Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada, Seattle Art Museum, The Henry Art Gallery; University of Washington, and Portland Art Museum. Paul Berger works and lives in the pacific northwest.
