Biography

Paulo Catrica’s photographs are explorations of social landscapes; his subjects range from the interior of the Portuguese National Opera house to residential areas of the Galapagos Islands to the brutalist architecture of the United Kingdom’s New Towns. No human figures appear in these descriptive photographs, which are forceful, even eerie, in their tranquility. Catrica presents architecture and the built environment—the ways in which we construct and organize our public spaces—as a critical part of our contemporary cultural condition.
