Peter Miller
American, b. 1978
Peter Miller is a photographer and yet he is not; rather, he deals with photochemical processes and the experimental use of light sources. Driven by the idea of making the invisible visible, Peter Miller specializes in experimenting with lighting and photo-development processes. In the tradition of artists from Man Ray to Peter Kubelka, he uses photo and film cameras as well as projectors, celluloid, and photographic paper not to depict objects, people, or landscapes, but to create new, illusory objects, structures, and worlds that do not exist in reality. Born in Burlington, USA, in 1978, Peter Miller lives and works in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Paris. In 2017 he participated in the 57th Venice Biennale. His work has been exhibited in Paris at the Palais de Tokyo and the Center Pompidou as well as at
the New Museum in New York. It is found in numerous international collections, including the Center Pompidou, the FRAC Midi-Pyrénées in Toulouse, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His monograph 36 Exposures was published by Hatje Cantz in December 2018.
