Petra Collins
Canadian, b. 1992
Petra Collins shot to fame in her teenage years for her dreamy, empowering photographs of young girls, which have been displayed worldwide in exhibitions, magazines, and books. Collins works in art, fashion, film, and music, frequently shooting editorial images for magazines like Vogue and i-D. In 2016, Artsy included her in its spring list of emerging artists to watch for her prescient, feminine visual style. Collins also collaborated with Tate Modern that year to direct a short film that coincided with the museum’s Georgia O’Keeffe retrospective. However, it was her formative years as a resident photographer for Rookie magazine that positioned Collins as a distinct voice of her generation. Her influence can be seen in the pastel-washed, vintage-inspired, and cinematic aesthetic that permeates much of millennial and Gen Z media.
