Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg
Swiss, American, Monica Guggisberg b. 1955, Philip Baldwin b. 1947
Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin have been working as a team since 1980. For twenty years their studio was in Switzerland. In 2001 they moved to Paris and have subsequently based themselves in rural Wales with a view over the hills since 2015.
It has been a kaleidoscopic journey which has brought them through almost every aspect of glass as a medium – craft, design, art, sculpture, architecture. Hot, cold, simple, complex. Their learning curve has been one of constant exploration bound together by certain very basic overarching themes, a love of the material, and a sense of art as an expression of beauty.
Baldwin and Guggisberg began as a two person “hotshop” making clean, functional designs for everyday use; collaborating with the traditional glass industry as designers, working with factories in Germany, Switzerland, the US and Italy. This resulted in their gradual use of glass as an expression of art; a celebration of their feelings about color, form, texture, pattern, and material.
Having started with a sober and classical attitude toward form and shape, they have gradually yielded to an expanded exuberance in both shape and dimension. If seeking original expression of beauty is the driving motivation, clarity of line is the thread which weaves the work together.
