Artist duo Pierre et Gilles is renowned for camp portraits that reimagine celebrities like Madonna and Iggy Pop as fantastical characters such as homoerotic religious figures and flamboyant matadors. Major exhibitions of the duo’s work have been presented at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the Jeu de Paume, both in Paris, and the New Museum in New York. Over decades of collaboration, romantic and artistic partners Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard have developed a highly stylized visual lexicon that walks the line between reality and fantasy, art history, and pop culture. They begin by photographing their subjects in elaborate, custom-built sets, then embellish the images with paint to transform them into kitsch icons.
