Qiu Zhenzhong
Chinese, born 1947

Qiu Zhenzhong, an ink brush painter and theorist of the Chinese calligraphic tradition, has focused his work on reinventing calligraphy to create a new pictorial language for the 21st century. Considered one of China’s most important and innovative interpreters of calligraphy, Qiu also produces painted ink works in which Chinese characters are barely legible, eschewing content in favor of form—a focus that the artist believes is necessary to draw the tradition into the realm of contemporary art. In his theories and art, Qiu emphasizes the importance of going beyond technical facility in order to express individual ideas and concepts.
