Qu Lei Lei
Chinese, b. 1951
Qu Lei Lei is an internationally renowned artist, mainly as a painter and draughtsman.
He was born in Heilongjiang Province, China, and grew up during the political turmoil of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
QU Lei Lei was a founding member of the 'Stars' movement, a group of art students who, between 1979 and 1983, created the first contemporary art movement in China. Their campaign for freedom of expression broke the stranglehold of Communist Party orthodoxy and paved the way for freedom of artistic expression in China.
QU Lei Lei exhibited first in China and then at the Venice Biennale, the Beijing Biennale and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. QU Lei's works have been exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan and are part of the permanent collections of the China National Museum. Some of his works were recently acquired by the Cernuschi Museum.
QU Lei Lei builds bridges between cultures through his extraordinary mastery of ink on paper, whether for his hands, like painters of the Dutch School or the Italian Renaissance; for his nudes, like modern French painters; or for his Chinese soldiers. All of his works exude intelligence and humanity.
Currently based in London, he divides his time between London and Beijing.
