In 2007, the performance artist Lián Amaris Sifuentes installed a woman’s boudoir in the corner of Union Square and began a 72-hour performance in which she slowly engaged in the process of preparing for a date. Fashionably Late for the Relationship, as the perfomance was named, was recorded on film by R. Luke Dubois (of whom Sifuentes was a student at Columbia University), in collaboration with WIKA, Toshiaki Ozawa, and Todd Reynolds. The performance, designed by Sifuentes to draw attention to a drawn-out feminine ritual opposed to the rapid pace of life in the public realm of Union Square, was compressed in Dubois’s film into 63 minutes. In the film iteration of Fashionably Late for the Relationship, Sifuentes appears to move at normal speed, while the cars and traffic around her move double-time.
