Rachel Howe
American, born 1979

Rachel Howe explores witchcraft, the occult, psychokinesis, and psychic upheaval in her photographs, collages, and drawings. She connects disparate elements such as textile patterning, fragmented figuration, and folk imagery to draw parallels between disordered emotions and the supernatural. “My work addresses the disjunction between emotional and physical realities, using art as occultism, in the literal sense of the word…” she says. Howe’s work itself is intended to activate a relationship between the viewer and the spirit world like a visual spell or a totem.
