Rachel Roske casts shadows across the surface of canvases, then captures them in graphite-on-canvas. “These paintings take as their subject a fleeting moment in time,” she has said. “This moment is re-presented through the shadow: our most literal and ancient index of time—the record of a place in the earth’s journey around the sun.” Sometimes she records evanescent movements, other times light or objects on a ground; each painting contrasts the ephemerality of the shadow with the permanence of the art object. Roske is also known for creating multi-media works on canvas with trompe l’oeil elements.
