Ramazan Can
Turkish, b. 1988
Born in Manisa, Turkey in 1988, Ramazan Can graduated in 2011 with a degree in fine arts education from Hacı Bayram Veli University, where he also completed his master’s degree in painting in 2015. He debuted with the solo show “Shamans and Demons” in 2015 at Gallery Foyart in Ankara, Turkey. The following year, two more exhibitions exploring the same theme were held in Ankara, at Hotel Houston and Tilky Gallery.
Shamanism and modern mysticism play a vital role in Can’s work. He draws from Anatolian motifs but keeps them at a distance, recontextualizing these motifs by combining them with Neo-Expressionist elements. Can’s work spans painting, collage, and sculpture, and though not political in nature, hints at a certain narrative and commentary on history and modern society. He lectures at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University within the fine arts department.
