Ray Daal
Surinamese, b. 1958
Exuberating the ambiance and richness of Caribbean culture and inspired by the abundantly present nature, Ray Daal’s work is characterized by bold use of colour, with a surprisingly vivid imagination not only in subject matter but also in form. This holds no room for pastels and restraint. Refashioning and styling often surface in his work, faces are transformed, with lovers almost merged with intensity. There is abstraction in his work, but it always remains recognizable. With no standstill in Ray’s work, there is vigour of movement at full power. In the 1980s he was part of the art collective Waka Tjopu which aimed to contribute to the cultural identity and society of Suriname. Over his career spanning more than three decades, Daal has fearlessly explored various media, continuously pushing the boundaries of his artistic expression.
