Ray Kass

Ray Kass represents the processes of nature at work through his abstract paintings. In his garden and landscape scenes, Kass captures texture, light and form in geometric bursts. The resulting playful, organic forms are not strictly modernist; Kass notes that Native Americans utilize geometric representations of nature in their basketweaving practices. Kass is the founder and artistic director of The Mountain Lake Workshop, an ongoing series of collaborative and inter-related workshops centered in the environmental, cultural, and community resources of the Appalachian region of southwestern Virginia. His past collaborators include Jiro Okura, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham.
