That which is visible in the pictorial space of Răzvan Boar’s works is just as important as that which is not. Pinpointing feelings of alienation and anxiety, Boar’s paintings, collages, and drawings feature bodies with parts obscured, disrupted, or missing altogether, using scaled-back color that evokes vintage black-and-white photographs. Ranging from small-scale to large-scale, Boar’s work alternates between photorealism and varying degrees of abstraction, though the ambiguous world inhabited by the subjects is always unstable and unsettling.
