Richard Aujard
French
Photographer and filmmaker Richard Aujard has been behind the lens since he was 19, beginning as an assistant in the photography department at Vogue, going on to produce his own acclaimed fashion, advertising, portrait, and documentary photographs, and to direct films focused on the intrigues and passions of crime. Attuned to the moods and narratives of his subjects, he makes images ranging from sultry to searing. Working in series, he has captured famous boxers, inside and away from the grit of the ring; actors and musicians; the often heavily tattooed men and women of Harley Davidson clubs; American Indians; Mexican charros (traditional horsemen); and the marginalized children of Mongolia. Penetrating the surface to find the humanity in everyone he shoots, Aujard states: “Sophistication embarrasses me. What I love in human beings are both strength and cracks.”
