Richard Tsao’s process-oriented and labor-intensive approach to painting often results in a work taking years to finish. Understanding the effects of time on his works, the artist manipulates colors, finding a balance between vibrant and subdued shades. The artist mixes paint with marble dust on a canvas, before soaking the canvas in a flooded room. He explains, “Maybe it has something to do with growing up in Thailand, where we had monsoons and our backyard was always flooded for, like, two months.” Tsao’s abstract style recalls Pollock’s, and his interest in color fields calls to mind Helen Frankenthaler or Ellsworth Kelly.
