Rinus Van de Velde
Belgian, b. 1983
Rinus Van de Velde is known for large-scale, fictional self-portraits and life-size decors that challenge the boundaries between the real and the imagined. Often casting himself in heroic roles, his works incorporate elements from various media, embedding his own narratives into existing images. Van de Velde primarily works with charcoal on canvas and colored pencil on paper, creating naturalistic scenes with dramatic contrasts. He also explores film as a medium, further delving into themes of fiction versus reality. Van de Velde has had solo exhibitions across the globe, such as the 2024 traveling museum exhibition “I Want to Eat Mangos in the Bathtub” at venues including the Art Sonje Center in Seoul, and a 2023 show with Galerie Max Hetzler in London.
