Rodney Smith
American, 1947–2016
Fashion and portrait photographer Rodney Smith primarily shot in black and white, producing pieces that possess a timeless quality, often featuring sharp highlights and deep shadows. Chris Between Hedges, Warwickshire, England (2006) is a striking black-and-white photo of a figure shown from behind and standing amidst rows of tall hedges. The subject, dressed in a flowing gown and a wide-brimmed hat, has an air of regality and poise, reflecting Smith’s unique ability to capture beauty and grace. Smith, who received a Master of Divinity in Theology from Yale University, also minored in photography, studying under esteemed photographer Walker Evans. Working exclusively in film photography throughout his career, Smith was also commissioned by notable publications to take portraits of prominent CEOs from around the world. Smith published many photo books, including his first and perhaps most notable work, titled In the Land of Light: Israel, a Portrait of Its People.
