Ryder Ripps
American, b. 1986
Conceptual artist, programmer, and cyber prankster Ryder Ripps is notorious for pushing the limits of convention and political correctness. Often classified as Post-Internet, Ripps’s works incorporate elements of modern technology; he frequently uses social media to manipulate the online discourse around his controversial exhibitions and stunts. In 2017, Ripps presented the virtual reality piece Diventare Schiavo (Become a Slave) at the Venice Biennale, inviting festival attendees to participate in the spectacle of labor by packing boxes in a virtual factory. Ripps is best known for his directorial and design work with his studio OKFocus, which includes creative collaborations with Grimes, Kanye West, and Travis Scott as well as brands like Nike, Red Bull, and Soylent. His works have been exhibited in solo shows in New York and Los Angeles, and he was named in Forbes “30 under 30” Art & Style list in 2016.
