SABAK
South Korean, b. 1989
Born in Seoul in 1989. Currently residing and working in Seoul. Sabak (b. 1989, Seoul) transforms familiar images from her everyday life into sensuous forms. Her artistic interest lies in metamorphosing commonplace sceneries, objects, people, animals, or internet-sourced images into fresh and unaccustomed forms. In most of her work, Sabak captures her fleeting impressions of seemingly nondescript subjects, or emotions such as emptiness, depression, and helplessness, using succinct and ambiguous brushstrokes. She complements these with loosely constructed three-dimensional works made from fragile and brittle materials. Drawing from her painterly sensibilities, Sabak effortlessly traverses the boundaries between different mediums, striving to expand the limits of painting by incorporating a diverse range of materials and combining different elements. Sabak reflects on the ephemeral and fragmented nature of the contemporary era and projects this contemplation through somewhat incomplete testimony. Through transforming the results of her investigations into ambiguous, unfinished forms, she explores the aesthetic potential of the imperfect.
Sabak graduated from Seoul Women’s University with BFA in Contemporary Art in 2014, and has since worked in Seoul. Her notable solo exhibitions include Hiiing - A Little Sad (Show and Tell, 2021) and Light Groups (Yeemock Gallery, 2019). Sabak also took part in numerous group exhibitions such as Journal Du Dehors (YPC SPACE, 2022), Illegible Map (Art Space3, 2021), Unknown Resource (Weksa, 2021), Fangfangfang- Masking Effect's Counterattack, (Gallery OOOJH, 2020), Aftertaste of Happiness (Artspace Hue, 2020), and Salon De Insa (Misulsegye Gallery, 2019).
