Biography

Drawing on her studies of traditional Mughal miniature painting in Pakistan, Saira Wasim paints Persian miniatures that address issues of power, politics, and globalization. In Ronald McDonald Comes to Your Town (2009), the familiar McDonald’s clown carries the American flag while awkwardly riding the back of a floating deity. “I use the miniatures to explore social and political issues that divide the modern world,” Wasim explains. “It pleads for social justice, respect, and tolerance through the use of caricature and satire.”
