Saner

Mexican cultures and traditions in surrealist paintings that he renders on paper, canvases, and walls. Saner has participated in Mexico’s graffiti art scene since 1990 and has since become known for his public murals found in cities from London to New Delhi. These richly colored paintings depict characters wearing Nahual masks, which —according to Mesoamerican folklore —can cause humans to morph into animals. The modern yet mythic personas, which also appear in his smaller-scale works, are typically surrounded by elements informed by Saner’s childhood experiences of living in pastoral Oaxaca. Through his mysterious figures, Saner probes and reinterprets primitivist archetypes.
