Sante Scaldaferri
Brazilian, 1928–2016
Painter, engraver, upholsterer, actor, scenographer, teacher.
In 1957, he graduated in painting from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Bahia - UFBA. At the same institution, he studied the encaustic technique with Rescála (1910-1986) and took a free engraving course with Mario Cravo Júnior (1923). Scaldaferri is responsible for setting up, in Salvador, the craft training centers of the Social Service for Commerce - Sesc, the Social Service for Industry - Sesi and the Bahia Artistic and Cultural Heritage Foundation. In the mid-1950s, he worked as a set designer in productions related to cinema novo and as an actor in films by Glauber Rocha (1939-1981). At the beginning of his artistic career, he produced portraits and paintings with a social theme. Between 1960 and 1964, he was artistic assistant to the architect Lina Bo Bardi(1914 - 1992) and professor at the Children's School at the Museum of Modern Art in Bahia - MAM/BA. The artist also creates several panels for public spaces located mainly in Salvador. In 1997, he published the book Os Primordios da Arte Moderna na Bahia, by Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado. In 2000, the video Sante Scaldaferri - A Dramaturgia dos Sertões was made, with photography by Mario Cravo Neto (1947) and direction by Walter Lima, and, in 2001, the video Sante Scaldaferri: Erudito e Popular, directed by Maria Ester Rabello. In 2003, the book Sante Scaldaferri: Drawings was launched by the Casa de Jorge Amado Foundation.
