A world-renowned architect, civil engineer, and sculptor, Santiago Calatrava crafts unmistakable structures, whose soaring, curving, graphic forms have been compared to waves, wings, and the ribs of a whale. Having established his reputation by building bridges, Calatrava has since altered the topography of cities around the world, with public commissions that include a sky-puncturing light rail bridge, shaped like a harp, in Jerusalem; the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens; and airports, train stations, residential buildings, and art museums that seem to roll over cities like waves or as if they are about to take flight. For Calatrava, architecture is a form of synthesis, as he describes: “Along with the topographical landscape, climatic environment and cultural landscape as a natural event, we also have the human climate. And with those elements I then begin a work of synthesis.”
