Sarah Morris
American, b. 1967
Sarah Morris’s large-scale geometric paintings, rendered in flat planes of glossy house paint, abstract the architecture, palettes, and intangible psychologies of the cities that inspire them. An irregular grid filled with blocks of mauve, blue, black, and lime green, for example, evokes the tinted glass façade of a Las Vegas hotel illuminated by neon light. Elsewhere, a kaleidoscope of overlapping rings suggests Beijing circa the 2008 Summer Olympics. Morris’s fascination with urban environments extends to her hypnotic films, which explore city politics, culture, aesthetics, and unsung narratives. Long shots from unusual angles and electronic music are recurrent motifs. Morris has exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Berlin, London, and beyond. Her work belongs to the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Tate, among others.
