Biography

Sarah Oppenheimer performs architectural interventions in order to examine social constructions in the built environment and play with perceptions of space. For D-33 (2012), Oppenheimer rearranged the walls in a gallery to form a configuration of six spaces connected by two slanting four-way openings; the walls appeared to tilt inwards and a mirrored glass panel further disoriented viewers. Participating in the exhibition “Automatic Cities: The Architectural Imaginary in Contemporary Art”, Oppenheimer cut portals into gallery walls, thereby creating frames through which visitors could view each other, in effect turning viewers into both voyeurs and subjects.
