Satoshi YABUUCHI
Japanese, b. 1953
Born in Osaka in 1953, YABUUCHI Satoshi studied sculpture at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and music, continuing his studies through the graduate Division. Between 1982-87 he was involved in the study and restoration of Buddhist statues at the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory of the same university. After that, he went on to establish his own unique sculpting style, based on traditional techniques, becoming active in a wide range of fields, including wood and bronze sculpture, prints, writing,video etc.
In 2004 he was appointed Professor of the Conservation Division(Sculpture) at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he has been involved in establishing a new philosophy for the preservation of cultural properties and raising a new generation of artists to carry on this work.
The objective of his work is to remind the Japanese of the rich spiritual world they left behind in the rush to modernize, bringing it back to life in a jocular and lighthearted way through his familiar sculpture.
