Saul Becker’s paintings are created both from memory and photographic documentation, a combination of objective and subjective resulting in works that are paradoxically impressionistic and photorealistic. His seascapes and abandoned, post-apocalyptic landscapes mix areas of heightened, tight detail with expansive, illusory space: a blurry horizon might extend from a hyperrealist foreground, or vice versa. Becker’s spaces are laden with mysticism and darkness, as if seen, as one critic has described it, “through the eyes of the last man on earth.”
