Saxana N. Schötschel
German, b. 1966
Saxana N. Schötschel (born 1966 in Düsseldorf, Germany) is a German painter known for her distinctive plein-air practice and her large-scale “tree portraits,” which explore the emotional and ecological presence of the natural world. She studied at the Werkkunstschule in Cologne and has worked as a freelance artist since 1993. Schötschel lives and works in Leipzig.
Her work is rooted in direct observation outdoors, where she paints in close physical and temporal dialogue with specific trees and landscapes. These paintings — often executed on site in oil on canvas — combine expressive gesture with precise attention to form, light, and atmosphere. Rather than depicting nature as scenery, Schötschel approaches each tree as an individual and sentient subject, creating portraits that reflect resilience, vulnerability, and the interconnectedness of living systems.
Schötschel has participated in numerous exhibitions across Germany, including shows in Berlin, Aachen, Wuppertal, Nettersheim, and Koblenz. Her work is recognized for its ecological focus and its commitment to a contemporary, site-responsive landscape practice.
