Sedrick Huckaby
American, b. 1975
The monumental paintings of Sedrick Huckaby celebrate Black families and emphasize the importance of familial lineage. Using thick, impasto brushwork, Huckaby adds exceptional detail to the faces and figures of his subjects—family members, friends, neighbors—in his primarily large-scale paintings, a format he chooses in an effort to “aggrandize ordinary people.” Sitting in Her Room (2008), shows an elderly woman sitting on a colorful chair in the center of a room, like a queen on her throne. With a wheelchair to one side and matching couch on the other, a dresser filled with objects accumulated in daily life is visible behind the central figure. A Yale University MFA graduate, Huckaby was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008. His work is featured in prominent collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
