Seo Hae-Young
South Korean, b. 1983
Seo Hae-Young was born in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, in 1983. She completed her undergraduate studies in 2006 in the Department of Sculpture at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University and went on to earn an MFA from the same institution in 2009. Seo is deeply engaged in exploring the intersections between traditional sculpture and contemporary art, continually questioning her role and possibilities as a sculptor and artist. In her early work, she sought to transcend the form and content of Korean modernist sculpture by searching for new sculptural approaches and overcoming the limits of traditional sculpture as a medium. Moreover, she aimed to connect everyday life and art through her “process-centric sculptures,” which reflect her unique experiences and perspectives as a woman and sculptor. Building on this, Seo has recently been involved in experimental projects that explore space and three-dimensional structures – the core elements of sculpture – in various contexts, focusing on the pivotal question: “How can sculpture capture the zeitgeist and broaden its scope?”
