Seo Young-deok
South Korean, b. 1984
Metalsmith Seo Young Deok works exclusively with chains sourced from bicycles and machines to build his larger-than-life human figures. Ranging from heads to entire bodies, these realistic nude sculptures express intense emotions. Seo began working with chains after graduating from the University of Seoul in 2011, where he studied Environmental Sculpture as both an undergraduate and graduate student. He rose to prominence for his unique process and had his first solo show at the Seongnam Cube Art Museum in 2017. Seo is interested in transforming chains from cold industrial material into works imbued with pathos. Displayed to emphasize their isolation, his sculptures explore ideas around loneliness and emotional suppression but also provide moments of tranquility in an increasingly crowded modern world.
