Shane Campbell
American, born 1978

Garnering attention for his grim yet comical paintings of belligerent policemen and down-and-out clowns being cruelly taunted or dragged off unconscious, Shane Campbell creates dimly lit exteriors in which to set his allegorical street scenes. Using the uniquely American imagery of the beat cop and the striped, red-nosed clown, a figure viewed as both benignly silly and menacing, Campbell’s works feature shady characters amid large parade floats and balloons. Campbell’s painterly style is distinguished by a dark, ominous palette and attention to perspective; he often sets his figures in the background or allows the shadow cast by their elongated, lifeless bodies to enter the foreground.
