Shawna Ankenbrandt’s photographs capture the insouciance and loneliness of modern beach culture, often featuring a single figure whose presence is meant to illustrate humankind’s relation to nature’s vastness. Raised in a landlocked state, Ankenbrandt approaches the ocean and its shoreline from an outsider’s perspective, frequently beautifying and abstracting the sea. In addition to photographing seascapes, she takes portraits, candid images, and street photography that are all marked by her exquisite use of light and composition. Ankenbrandt, who also produces commercial and editorial photography, has had her work featured in the The New York Times and Harper’s Bazaar.
