Shay Id Alony
Israeli, b. 1979
Specific to contemporary Israel as well as ancient history, Shay Id Alony’s sculptures, which he constructs from found materials, allow the artist to explore his personal and cultural identity. Alony’s decorative structures, reminiscent of ritual objects, reflect his interest in ancient cultures and in restoring spiritual qualities to ceremonial objects. Much of the artist’s work addresses themes of power, identity, and defense mechanisms. For example, shields engraved with cave paintings explore the concept of masked identities, while halved sculptures reveal the contrast between the objects’ internal and external appearances. Alony’s work encourages viewers to question and contemplate the tension between individual and collective identities, particularly within the context of contemporary culture.
