Simone Nieweg

German, b. 1962

Biography

Simone Nieweg photographs agricultural landscapes in rural Germany. While at first unassuming, Nieweg’s pictures of fields, country roads, gates, farm structures, and allotment gardens have a delicate, quiet beauty, stemming from an impeccable attention to composition and a palette of hazy browns and vibrant greens. A lesser known member of the Dusseldorf School, Nieweg reflects her training under Bernd and Hilla Becher in her similar, though less formally rigorous, project of documenting the structures and physical evidence of human industry.
