Sol Wilson was a painter of cityscapes, seascapes, and landscapes that are infused with an inherent melancholy drawn from his exposure to romanticism and expressionism.
In addition to landscapes, Wilson created portraits and painted figures imbued with a similar resigned melancholy, often narratively related to a conflict with nature or time: Storms, industrial struggles, loneliness and isolation all are rendered to elucidate their quiet beauty.
Wilson was born in Poland in 1893. He studied with Robert Henry at the National Academy of Design, and lived most of his life between Provincetown, Massachusetts, and New York, New York.
