Sonia Boyce
British, b. 1962
Sonia Boyce uses photography, film, installation, performance, printmaking, and other disciplines to explore the intersection of class, race, and gender in her native Britain and beyond. Boyce first rose to prominence in the 1980s as part of her country’s Black arts movement, alongside artists including Rasheed Araeen, Lubaina Himid, and Shakka Dedi. At the time, Boyce was producing trenchant figurative drawings and photo collages. Her practice later expanded to include a social dimension, incorporating song and dance. Boyce has exhibited in London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. She was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 2022 Venice Biennale, making her the first Black woman to take over the festival’s British pavilion. In 2020, she was included in The Artsy Vanguard.
