Sougwen Chung
Canadian, Chinese, b. 1985
Sougwen Chung is an internationally renowned artist & researcher exploring the boundaries of collaboration between human and machine. Chung's work investigates the interactions between mark-made-by-hand and the mark-made-by-machine as an approach to understanding the dynamics of humans and systems.
As a former research fellow at MIT, Chung self-programmed and built robots named D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit Generation_). These machines mimic the artist’s hand-drawn gestures and synchronously draw along with her. Through AI, these robots have gained robotic memory to generate sketches based on neural nets trained on Sougwen’s drawings gestures.
In this new body of cutting-edge work, Chung explores the future of human and machine interactions within the natural ecosystem. By connecting her own biometrics to self-built and programmed machines, Chung now intends to explore the capacity of AI to react to the energy created by her body's rhythms and electric activity.
