Stas Orlovski works across a wide range of historical materials, methods, and techniques to “depict a world of glorious decay.” He describes his exploration of sentimental and nostalgic iconography—such as full moons, flowers, butterflies, and songbirds—as “a vehicle for personal expression.” Beautiful, dense, and somber-hued, Orlovski’s compositions allude to Russian children’s books, Victorian illustrations, Japanese prints, and Dutch botanical paintings. His 2009 “Nocturne” series, fusing imagery of birds, trees, flowers, and surreal landscapes with abstract forms and human silhouettes, exemplifies the blend of painting, drawing, printmaking, and collage for which Orlovksi is known.
