Stephen Greene

Though he was trained as a figurative artist, prodigious painter and educator Stephen Greene shifted toward making abstract work after hearing Clement Greenberg lecture on abstraction in 1957. A figure in the New York art scene of the 1950s and ’60s, he made abstract work that is marked by sensuous brushstrokes and interred symbols while also incorporating elements of Abstract Expressionism, Color-field painting, and Surrealism. While at Princeton, he taught well-known artists such as Frank Stella, with whom he remained close friends.
