Steven Nederveen
Canadian, b. 1971
Steven Nederveen is celebrated for his mixed-media artworks that blend elements of painting and photography. Drawing on both reality and his own imagination, Nederveen’s work centers around the complex relationship that humans have with the ever-fluctuating natural world. The artist underscores the inherent contradiction of a globalized society that simultaneously celebrates and harms the environment. Mist of Gold (2019) shows small waves crashing down on one another in the ocean’s tide, but here, Nederveen has accented the waves’ foam by gilding it with glittering hints of gold. He travels around the world to photograph different natural landscapes and locations, and then modifies his photographic prints by applying layers of acrylic paint to the image, using impasto as well as vigorous scrapes and splatters of paint. Interested in the connection between nature and spirituality, Nederveen’s artwork is informed by his meditation practice.
