Biography

Trained as an architect, Stijn Ank investigates sculpture’s formal language while highlighting its negotiation of positive and negative space. Using wood, metal, and rubber forms, Ank casts his objects in plaster, releasing a dye during the process that creates streaks of color in otherwise white forms. His objects are autonomous—evinced in their numeric numbers—defying any relationship to one another or to given representational forms. As freestanding or wall-hung objects, they lean, bend, and fold, highlighting the space surrounding them and evoking the Minimalist belief that sculpture’s essence derives both from its objecthood and its relationship to its surroundings.
