Su Dong Ping
Chinese, born 1958

Energy and gesture are central to Su Dong Ping’s large-scale paintings, which embody the artist’s state of mind at the time of creation. Backed by the belief that the quality of an artwork is determined by the amount of energy the artist puts into it, Ping’s abstract action paintings reflect a tense balance between Chinese and Western ideologies and styles of painting. “My greatest concern is…that I am inside my painting so that my life and art are one,” Ping has said. To achieve this, he enters a meditative trance before beginning a painting, allowing his spirit to spontaneously manifest itself on the canvas, preferring freedom of gesture to a controlled outcome.
