Biography

Wang Suling’s boldly colored, large-scale paintings are predominantly abstract yet simultaneously suggest the contours of landscape, human silhouettes, and calligraphic marks. This convergence of various patterns, vibrant colors, abstract shapes, and figurative elements lends a tangible sense of depth and rhythm to Suling’s compositions. In Open Paths of Origin (2006), for instance, swirling stripes of color sweep across the canvas, punctuated by delicate line work that seems to vaguely depict tree branches. The artist has described her work as a means of articulating her own mixed feelings about the rapid industrialization of her native Taiwan, as well as the tension resulting from her dual identification with both Eastern and Western visual and cultural traditions.
