Sungho Cho’s work subverts longstanding practices and assumptions about jewelry-making, undermining commonly held notions of preciousness and value. “I tried to use plywood in my jewelry work, a comparatively cheap material, which we use in construction and carpentry, to create an object with a totally new ability—different from the one before,” Cho has said. Forgoing shiny stones and metals, Cho’s jewelry also avoids conventional forms, relying on geometry and bright colors to create necklaces and brooches. Cho similarly discards production techniques typically used by jewelers, instead using the metric system to measure her work, thereby aligning her with more industrial modes of production.
