Icy landscapes convey the states of mind of her subjects, typically solitary young women whose faces are never seen. Images often include enigmatic bodies of water, capitalizing on water’s ability to inspire dreams and induce fear while reflecting the cool atmosphere of Majuri’s native Scandinavia. In Elskar Fyr (High Tide) (2006), for example, a young woman wearing a bright red dress wades away from the viewer toward a lighthouse through gray, murky water that complements the colorless sky. A self-portrait of sorts (although the model is not the artist), its melancholic quality expresses Majuri’s personal sorrows, heartaches, and feelings of being lost in the world.
